The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) is pleased with the steady increase in the levels of compliance to the Zambian Standard, ZS 560 for used motor vehicles.

ZABS Head Marketing and Public Relations Hazel Mafwenko says this is a Code of practice for inspection and testing of used motor vehicles for road worthiness.

Mrs. Mafwenko says the Bureau has noted with gratitude that the number of used motor vehicles that are entering the country without road worthiness certificates is slowly but steadily decreasing.

She says this development reflects positively on the robust sensitization efforts that have been carried out to alert the public about the need to ensure that they import motor vehicles that have been inspected and passed to be road worthy at the point of origin.

Mrs. Mafwenko has noted for instance that between April and June this year, a total of 2,235 used motor vehicles entered the country of which 1,512 had been inspected and had road worthiness inspections certificates, while 723 had no road worthiness inspections certificates representing compliance levels of about 68%.

She says between July and September this year, the total number of motor vehicles that entered the country were 1, 590 of which 1,156 had road worthiness certificates and 434 had no Roadworthiness Inspections Certificates representing 72% compliance levels.
