Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister Lloyd Kaziya has attributed the shortage of water the country is experiencing to climate change.

Mr. Kaziya says his government is commitment to end the water shortage crisis experienced in the country.

He has observed that a combination of drought as well as unsafe environmental practices has conspired to make raw water sources unproductive for a country that seeks to achieve universal coverage by 2025.

Mr. Kaziya notes that some residents in Chongwe District are battling an acute water shortage as the Chongwe River, the source of raw water to serve the communities, has dried up.

He says this can also be attributed to deforestation which is causing a lot of problems in the ecosystem of the country because people are not paying attention to preserving the trees that hold the rivers.

Mr. Kaziya says there reason why the country is experiencing rational water is because rivers do not have water but government is doing everything possible to address the challenges.

He says there is need to sensitize the community about deforestation and protect the forest.

He explains that when forests are destroyed, the atmosphere, water bodies and the water table are all affected hence the need to manage the water bodies as well as water resources.
