Minister of labour and social security Brenda Tambatamba says government has joined the call for SADC member states to develop comprehensive national labour migration policies as the socio economic and political salience of migration remains high on the global policy landscape.

Speaking when she officially opened the country level tripartite dialogue on the development of a labour migration strategy at Twangale park in Chilanga today, Ms. Tambatamba says government believes that well managed migration neutralizes the threats that come with migration, and respects the human rights of migrants as well as promote safe and orderly mobility.

She says migration provides the country an opportunity of leveraging on critical knowledge and skills transfer through strengthened engagement with the diaspora.

Ms Tambatamba adds that the Zambian government remains committed to the implementation of specific actions towards the realization of the global compact on migration and will continue to implement various migration management initiatives in line with the country’s migration context and realities.

Speaking at the same event, Southern Africa Migration Management Project -SAMM- Chief Technical Advisor, Gloria Moreno Fontes, says the project contributes to the realization of the sustainable development goal number 8.8 which highlights the protection of labour rights and promotion of safe and secure working environment for all workers including migrant workers especially women migrants, and SDG 10.7 which highlights the facilitation of orderly safe and responsible migration and mobility of people.
