The Zambia National Education Coalition (ZANEC) has proposed that the education sector should get not less than 20% of the budgetary allocation in the 2023 national budget in view of the free education policy being implemented by the government.

The ministry of finance has invited various stakeholders to submit tax ,non –tax and expenditure proposals ,for review and possible inclusion in the 2023 national budget and the 2023-2025 Medim Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).

In a phone interview with Q-News, ZANEC Executive Director George Hamusunga says the increased allocation to the education sector in the 2023 national budget will help cushion the current challenges the sector is facing such as inadequate desks and classrooms.

Mr Hamusunga has also noted the need to expand the current skills development levy to an education levy.
