Lusaka based Clergy Bishop Andrew Mwenda has opposed the decision by President Hakainde Hichilema to abolish the death penalty.

Bishop Mwenda who is also Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia General Secretary says this is not the right direction to take.

He says there is need to understand why the Death Penalty was introduced in the first place.

Bishop says in his personal capacity, he is not for the idea of President Hichilema’s decision to abolish the death penalty.

But Independent Churches of Zambia Board Chairperson Bishop David Masupa says the move to abolish death penalty is welcome especially that Zambia is a Christian Nation.

Bishop Masupa has since urged Zambians to support the move which he has described as progressive.

And Council of Churches in Zambia General Secretary Father Emmanuel Chikoya has welcomed the political will by President Hichilema to abolish the death penalty.

During the Africa Freedom Day commemoration, President Hichilema said his government will work with Parliament and various stakeholders to end the Death penalty.
