Habitat for Humanity Zambia board vice chairperson Maureen Mwanawasa is elated with the recently launched 8th national development plan (8NDP) which she says complements the national land policy of 2021 and national housing policy 2020 in increasing access to decent and affordable housing for all.

Mrs. Mwanawasa notes that the 8NDP intends to reduce the national housing deficit from 1,539,000 to 1,378,000 housing units by 2026 through programs such as housing sector reforms, public and social housing, settlement improvement and housing finance.

Speaking during the women build event to commission three houses for vulnerable women in Lusaka’s Bauleni compound, Mrs. Mwanawasa says if effectively implemented, the 8NDP will go a long way in alleviating housing poverty especially  for the most vulnerable such as the aged, people living with disabilities and orphaned.

Speaking at the same event, outgoing Standard Chartered Bank Zambia Chief Executive Officer, Herman Kasekende notes that without decent shelter, people cannot realize their full economic potential.

Mr. Kasekende explains that when one lives in a deplorable condition they tend to face stress in their daily lives, which in turn prevents them from realizing their full potential.

And one of the beneficiaries 76 year-old Elizabeth Zulu thanked habitat for humanity Zambia for constructing a three roomed house for her.
