President Hichilema calls for more EU investment in Zambia

President Hakainde Hichilema has called for increased investment in Zambia by European Countries.

President Hichilema says Zambia has attracted several European Union companies with an estimated investment of 1.6 billion Euros in Energy, Environment, Construction engineering services, Agriculture among others.

Speaking at the first ever, EU-Zambia Economic Forum in Lusaka today, under the theme: “Economic Transformation through Green Growth”, President Hichilema says the 1.6 billion Euros investment is not enough considering that Europe is a giant in economic terms.

The Head of State has noted the need to work hard and target to triple the investment figure at a minimum of five billion Euros.

President Hichilema says the country has set a target of delivering and achieving 6 million tons of copper in the next decade.

He says it is for this reason that the European Companies can take advantage and invest in the mining sector.

The Head of State is however, confident that the engagements will be fruitful and will result in the creation of strong and lasting business partnerships.

He has reiterated that the government is keen to consolidate and strengthen ties and contribute to the growth of Trade and investment between Zambia and European Union.

Speaking earlier, Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga says the EU remains an important partner for Zambia with significant import and export volumes.

And EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Anusz Wojciechowski has reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to invest not only in Zambia, but Africa as a whole.
