GBV claims 19 lives in quarter one

Nineteen (19) people were murdered in the first quarter of 2022 in acts of Gender Based Violence across the country.

During the same period, 6,915 cases of Gender Based Violence were reported countrywide compared to 4,254 recorded in the first quarter of 2021 showing an increase of 2,661 cases translating to a 62.5%.

Giving the 2022 first quarter GBV statistics, Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says the 19 murder cases recorded in the first quarter are in comparison to 5 cases recorded during the first quarter of 2021 showing, an increase by 14 cases translating to 73.7%.

Mr. Hamoonga says of the 19 murder cases recorded, men and women accounted for 9 cases each while 1 victim was a boy.

And Mr. Hamoonga discloses that the first quarter gender victim disaggregated data indicates that 1,769 child victims were abused countrywide of which 1,284 were girls while 485 were boys, while 4,058 women and 1,088 men were also abused.

He says 764 sexual abuse cases were recorded compared to 713 cases recorded in 2021 showing an increase by 51 cases.

Mr Hamoonga says Lusaka province recorded the highest gbv cases with 1,108 followed by Copperbelt province with 662 cases, while tazara division recorded the lowest GBV cases with 44 cases.

Meanwhile mr. Hamoonga says 540 cases of child defilement were recorded during the period under review with lusaka province recording the highest number of cases at 145 followed by eastern province with 92 cases.

He says 106 rape cases were recorded while 20 cases of attempted rape were recorded during the period under review.
