A total of 71,657 people have so far been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the last two days following the relaunch of the vaccination campaign on the 14th May, 2022 aimed at reaching over 70 percent of the eligible population by end of June.

In a speech read on her behalf by ministry of health permanent secretary for technical services Professor Lackson Kasonka during the COVID-19 update in Lusaka today, Health minister Sylvia Masebo reiterated that Government with the support of local and international partners remains committed to ensuring all eligible individuals have access to the COVID-19 vaccines.

Ms Masebo is hopeful that all those who were not yet vaccinated against COVID-19 are taking advantage of the campaign which has facilitated provision of vaccines as close to the people as  possible.

The minister notes that an imminent 5th wave threatens the country’s public health security considering the upsurges occurring in some countries within the region.

Meanwhile Ms Masebo is concerned over the continued increase in new COVID 19 cases being recorded with the country recording total of 501 new cases, compared to 393 the previous week, indicating a 27% increase.

The country recorded 53 new cases out of 1,164 tests conducted countrywide in the last 34 hours indicating a 5 percent national positivity with no new death.

And Ms Masebo has noted with concern and sadness that Zambia remains threatened by polio following reports of another case of confirmed polio in Mozambique.
