Zambia Police Service National Road Safety Coordinator, Yoram Phiri has noted with concern the influx of unregistered motorbikes in most rural areas of Zambia.

Mr. Phiri says having conducted a survey in Chipili district, majority of the motorbikes are not registered, a situation which is a recipe for disaster as it is very hard to trace them in case of illegalities.

He has told Q-news that most of the riders are also not licensed and carry a lot of people on their motorbikes which is a danger to people’s lives.

Mr. Phiri says a motorbike is supposed to carry only the rider and one passenger, but that as many as three passengers are being carried one bike at a goal in Chipili without wearing safety helmets.
