Habitat for humanity Zambia has projected Zambia’s housing deficit to reach at about 3.3 million housing units by 2030.

Habitat for humanity Zambia board vice chairperson Maureen Mwanawasa has noted with concern that the housing poverty in Zambia has reached alarming levels.

Dr. Mwanawasa disclosed that research has revealed that about 60% of the Zambian population lives below the poverty datum line meaning that the majority of Zambians cannot afford to make an outright housing purchase as it is extremely expensive, except for a few individuals who have access to finance.

She said this during the handover ceremony of a three roomed house, built for a 31 single mother of two, Linda Muluwe whose house collapsed due to heavy downpour late last year  in Mapepe area of Chilanga district.

And the financier of the project Zambia Building Society ZNBS  board chairman David Nama says ZNBS remains resolute to its core mandate of helping increase the housing stock in the country through the provision of affordable and sustainable mortgage finance.

Dr. Nama says the partnership with habitat for humanity Zambia and the community is a clear demonstration of ZNBS continued commitment to seeking innovative ways to positively impact the Zambian community through the provision of decent housing.

Meanwhile the beneficiary of the house Linda Muluwe has thanked habitat for humanity Zambia and Zambia building society for coming to her aid, saying the good gesture has transformed her life.
