ActionAid Zambia has urged government to accelerate the process of repealing and replacing the public order act and share detailed timeframes of when the amendment of the act will be done.

cabinet has approved in principle the introduction of a bill in parliament to amend the public order act chapter 113 of the laws of Zambia, further announcing that the act will be reviewed in its entirety so as to come up with a sound legislation which will not only stand the test of time but also one that promotes the public good.

And ActionAid Country Director Nalucha Ziba who has welcomed the development is hopeful that the amendment of the public order act will end the era of using it to shrink democratic spaces and hinder citizens from exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights to assemble and associate.

Ms. Ziba is further hopeful that government will engage in wider stakeholder consultation in the process of the amendment to ensure that it reflects the views of the people and advance democracy and human rights in Zambia.
