Home grown initiatives key to tourism boost – Muhanga

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Evans Muhanga has charged that destination Zambia’s comparative advantage lies in the opportunity to advance home grown sustainable tourism initiatives.

Mr. Muhanga says as the tourism sector starts to rebound, the sector players have a duty to contribute to the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, manage resources efficiently and integrate local communities and natural assets into business models in order to maximize the value.

Speaking when he officially opened a  four day training workshop on sustainable tourism in Lusaka Mr. Muhanga says government’s desire is to achieve enhanced international market access for destination Zambia through the application of sustainable tourism principles.

He has since challenged the players in the tourism sector to leverage the potential of tourism and use it as a tool for positive transformation for their businesses and the communities in which they operate.

And speaking in a sideline interview CBI a Netherlands organization under the Ministry of Foreign Affair Local consultant in Zambia Rachel Ward has stressed the need to sell Zambia as tourist destination and not as a stopover destination.
