Government has sourced K18, 008, 027. 90 million to clear part of the salary arrears owed to TAZARA employees.

And government has released approximately US$3.3 million as recapitalization to TAZARA in order for the Company to repair various pieces of rolling stock in order to enhance business.

Minister of Transport and Logistics Frank Tayali, says the money covers about three months of salary arrears covering December 2021, January and February 2022 respectively.

During his recent visit to Mpika and Kasama which enabled him to interact with the workers at Mpika TAZARA Head Office, Mr. Tayali assured the employees that the financial woes of the railway company were actively under consideration as he was engaging the Minister of Finance for a lasting solution.

In a statement availed to QTV by Ministry Public Relations Officer, Ndubi Mvula, Mr. Tayali says the money will help the Company dismantle the arrears as well as help in the completion of rehabilitation works on the Chambeshi Bridge which will eventually enhance local revenue collection.

The Minster further assured that the Bridge is expected to come back into full operation by July 2022.

He says the strategic move by the Government is largely targeted towards turning TAZARA into a self-sustaining Company.
