Over 1.4 million children have been vaccinated against polio in three provinces of Zambia in the first round of the vaccination campaign which was launched on 24th March, 2022.

The ministry of health had launched the polio vaccination campaign using the bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV), targeting 1,340,238 children under five years in Lusaka, Muchinga and Eastern Provinces and so far, 1,433, 785 children have been vaccinated representing an average 107% coverage.

Health Minister Sylvia Masebo says the subsequent rounds of the vaccination campaign are set for April, June and July 2022.

Ms Masebo has since stated that going forward, the campaign will be conducted as a door to door activity with heath workers visiting homes to vaccinate children in the targeted age groups.

And giving an update on the COVID 19 situation in the country, Ms Masebo says Zambia has in the last 24 hours recorded 133 new cases.

She however, states that the country this week recorded a slight increase in the number of COIVID-19 cases, attributing this to laxity in adherence to the prescribed public health and safety measures.
