Nkombo warns bus operators against undesignated bus stations

Minister of Local Government and Housing Garry Nkombo has directed all local authorities working with relevant stakeholders such as the Zambia Police, Road Transport and Safety Agency, Bus drivers and Taxis operators to ensure complete compliance to the laws governing designated bus stations.

Speaking at a joint media briefing with his Ministry of Transport counterpart Frank Tayali,Mr Nkombo has noted with concern that bus stops have now been turned into bus stations.

He has observed with utmost concern that public nuisance and complete abrogation of laws, such as, illegal taxi ranks and bus stations have taken root in the communities in Lusaka and the country at Large.

Mr Nkombo notes that bus operators are now parking and loading along main roads in the central business district abandoning designated bus stations.

The Minister has since indicated that he will together with relevant authorities conduct random checks on people in the habit of violating the road traffic regulations.

And Transport Minister Frank Tayali says the country has laws which prohibit the wanton stopping of buses and taxes and the picking of passengers from any place other than designated bus stops.

Mr. Tayali says the Ministry will not allow any public or private vehicle to cause obstruction on the road by picking people along the roads.

And Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala has called on residents in the city to work with the Council and government in bringing sanity in the city.
