The Media Institute of Southern Africa Zambia has condemned the decision by the Mkushi District town council to bar journalists from covering a full council meeting that happened on Tuesday 29th march, citing that the local government act of 2019 does not allow coverage of the meetings by the media.

MISA Zambia chairperson Rev. Barnabas Simatende says the development is therefore, retrogressive, undemocratic, worrying and as such should be condemned by all well-meaning Zambians.

He has reminded Mkushi District Town Council that section 8 of the local government act of 2019 does provide for media coverage of full council meetings to allow those not in attendance of the meeting to follow the proceedings.

Rev. Simatende says council meetings are open to the public and therefore, the public is free to attend and follow the proceedings through any channel of communication.
