The Public Service Management Division (PSMD) has urged trade unions across the country to emulate the civil servants and allied workers union of Zambia by coming up with initiatives that seek to empower their members with access to decent housing.

PSMD director, Felix Mushabati has noted that housing is a necessity not only at the time of retirement, but also during the time when people are still in full time employment.

Speaking on behalf of PSMD permanent secretary, Margaret Miyoba during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the union and horizon properties limited,  Mr. Mushabati said many Zambians especially civil servants are still facing the challenge of accessibility to owning houses.

He has expressed optimism that through the initiative, all the members of the civil servants and allied workers union of Zambia will be able to afford decent accommodation even before retirement.

Speaking at the same event, civil servants and allied workers union of Zambia president, Davy Chiyobe has noted that access to housing has continued to be a challenge for many Zambians especially the urban poor with an estimated 1.5 million housing deficit.

Meanwhile, horizon properties limited chief executive officer, Saul Kiwempindi says Zambian problems need home grown solutions.

He says the MOU aims at addressing the challenges of accommodation among Zambians especially civil servants.
