Former Patriotic Front (Pf) Deputy Secretary General, Mumbi Phiri and Shebby Chilekwa have been committed to the high court for trial in a matter in which they are charged with alleged murder of Lawrence Banda in Kaoma District in 2019.

Magistrate Bestings Hamasiki committed the duo after receiving a certificate of committal from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Earlier, Defense Lawyer, Charles Changano, applied for a preliminary inquiry in the matter at the subordinate court to determine whether or not the evidence before it is sufficient for the case to be heard in the high court.

Mr. Changano informed the court that he was acting on behalf Of Makebi Zulu, a fellow lawyer representing Mumbi Phiri an application that is backed by the criminal procedure code section 223 of the laws of Zambia.

However, the magistrate court could not hear the preliminary inquiry because the prosecution team was in receipt of the certificate of committal to the high court for the matter to be tried.

After the court session Mr. Changano says the defense team is happy with the outcome of today’s appearance.

This is in a matter the duo is accused of having shot and killed a UPND supporter Lawrence Banda during campaign in the runner up to the Kaoma Council Chairperson by-election in October 2019.
