Copperbelt province has recorded a 20 percent decrease in maternal mortality cases.

Provincial health director Robert Zulu says this is the lowest percentage so far that the province has recorded.

Dr Zulu says between 2020 and 2021, the province has seen a significant drop in mothers dying on giving birth as compared to the previous year.

He says last year alone, 88 mothers died as a result of birth-related complications as compared to the previous year in which at least 103 mothers died, bringing the number to 20 percent improvement in maternal mortality.

Dr Zulu explains that government is working hard to bring down the incidences to zero at both community and facility level.

Meanwhile,Dr Zulu says the province has also recorded a 20 percent reduction in malaria cases in the period under review.

He has attributed this to some of the interventions that the government through the ministry of health has put in place such as the indoor residue spray programme and distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets among others.
