Golden party of Zambia (GPZ) president Jackson Silavwe has urged government to swiftly address drug shortages in hospitals to avoid premature loss of life and productivity.

Mr Silavwe says it is highly regrettable that most public hospitals and clinics have now turned into consultancy facilities where patients queue up for very long hours only to be given prescriptions.

He notes that with 65% plus Zambians living in extreme poverty or below USD $2 per day, it is extremely unethical for government through public health facilities to add to the vulnerable citizens’ misery.

Mr. Silavwe states that the discussion must be around the improvement of ‘quality and efficient’ health services in public health facilities and not the lack of medicines.
