Zambia has joined the world in commemorating International Women’s Day, an annual event held on March 8 to celebrate the achievements of women in social, economic, political and cultural life towards making the world a better place for all.

The event, which has been observed since 1911, is also used to rekindle the struggle for gender parity and women’s empowerment.

The united nation’s theme for this year’s observance is “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow” in recognition and celebration of the women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation and response and to honor their leadership and contribution towards a sustainable future.

And Non-Governmental Gender Organizations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) Board Chairperson Mary Mulenga says it is the desire and expectations that Zambia will build on past efforts and accelerate the pace towards gender parity agenda between women and men, girls and boys under the new dawn government led by president Hichilema.

Speaking during the commemoration of the international women’s day which is being graced by President Hakainde Hichilema, Mrs. Mulenga says the sad reality of high gender inequality that currently exists require magnanimity and boldness of leadership.

Mrs. Mulenga says Zambia’s growing democracy requires a level of conscience by every citizen to ensure women and men, girls and boys are made an integral aspect of sustainable developments.

She says while progress has been made towards an all inclusive society for both women and men, NGOCC remain concerned with entrenched patriarch that continues to take away the gains that are being made.

The head of state is expected to give his official statement at the commemoration which is currently ongoing.
