Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ), Director General, Quince Mwabu says the Ministry of Health must be held accountable over the acute shortages of drugs in almost all public health facilities in the Country.

According to Dr. Mwabu, a survey conducted by his organisation in the last two weeks revealed that most essential drugs have run out and patients are mostly receiving prescriptions.

In a statement to Q-News, Dr Mwabu says health institutions are now merely consultancy centers which he describes as an assault on the drive for universal health coverage.

He says while he appreciates the fact that the Ministry is tackling the Covid-19 pandemic, neglecting other components of the health system is grave and must be addressed immediately.

Dr. Mwabu says the shortage of drugs has led to many deaths because most patients are not able to access drugs from public health facilities.
