Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo Phiri has predicted that the country will record a maize bumper harvest in the 2021/2022 farming season.

Mr. Phiri is basing his optimism on the maize which he says looks promising in some parts of the country.

He adds that the measures government had put it place to contain the fall of army worms and provision of early maturing seed to farmers for replanting in areas affected by dry spells gives confidence that the country will record a bumper harvest.

Meanwhile Mr. Phiri has maintained that government will not ban the export of maize.

He says it is government’s policy to keep the borders open, emphasizing that grain exports will not be halted in the wake of anticipated poor yields.

Mr. Phiri has since called on Zambians not to panic because the country is food secure.
