The government has announced that the evacuation of Zambian nationals who had crossed over from Ukraine to Poland following the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been postponed to Tuesday, 8th March 2022.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Stanley Kakubo says the delay has been caused by the closure of airspace in Ukraine resulting in airspace congestion in the Europe-controlled zone.

Making the announcement in a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Kakubo also disclosed that 95 Zambians are safely in Poland under government care and ready to be evacuated.

He says two have safely moved out of Ukraine but have opted to remain in Europe while three are in Kharkiv and have opted to remain in Ukraine.

The minister adds that out of the 14 students who were in the city of Sumy, two are in transit to Lviv after securing private transport with other foreign nationals.

And Mr. Kakubo has disclosed that in line with Zambia’s covid-19 guidelines, necessary measures have been put in place for the smooth screening of Zambian nationals upon arrival hence parents will not have immediate access to the students.
