The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has completed the construction of the Luano grid extension project in Central province.

The project, which involved the construction of 65.56 kilometres of 33 kilovolts overhead power line, will supply electricity to public institutions such as the district administration office, civic centre, Kampelembe health center, Nkulumashiba and Old Mkushi primary schools, as well as chief Chikupili’s palace in Luano district.

Speaking during a community engagement meeting, Acting Luano District Commissioner (DC), Jessy Mulenga commended REA for its commitment towards completing the project.

Ms. Mulenga has since urged residents of Luano to guard the infrastructure jealously and avoid vandalism.

Meanwhile, Luano District Council Planning Officer, Pasquil Kakula implored people in the area to electrify their residential and commercial properties whilst following the right procedure.

Mr. Kakula said his office will provide those who wish to have access to electricity, with documents such as sketch maps and consent letters as proof of ownership.

The Luano grid extension project was conceived in 2018 in line with REA’s mandate to develop electricity infrastructure in over 1,200 rural growth centres across the country.

REA has since officially handed over the project to the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO).
