Zambia is energy sufficient – Kapala

Energy Minister Chibwe Kapala has told Parliament that Zambia is now energy sufficient currently generating 3,200 mega watts.

In a ministerial statement in Parliament today, Mr Kapala says the country is now generating its own power and is longer importing electricity.

He says the country currently has a peak demand power consumption of 2,400 megawatts, adding that average demand continues to grow.

Mr Kapala says the mining sector is the largest consumer of electricity generated in country accounting for 51% followed by domestic consumers at 33%.

The Energy Minister adds that the national electrification rate stands at 34%.
