Four people have died on the spot after the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into the Litawa river along Litawa road in Mongu district.
Confirming the incident which happened on Wednesday, around 04:30 hours, Police Spokesperson Rea Hamoonga says the accident happened when the motor vehicle a Toyota Surf with unknown registration number which was being driven by Elvis Mubiana failed to ascend after crossing a bridge and rolled backwards and plunged into the river.
Mr Hamoonga has identified the deceased as Matakala Mundia aged 46 of Liyande Primary School,Mufanga Fanwell aged 39 of Litawa village,Matomola Simunje aged 36 of Namengo area and Eliza Simagolwa aged 36 of Namengo area.
He adds that three juveniles aged between two and eight years were treated and discharged.
Mr Hamoonga says the bodies of the deceased have since been deposited in Lewanika General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem while the driver of the vehicle is currently on the run.
