TIZ questions AU’s award to Zambia

Wesley Chibamba

Transparency International Zambia has questioned African Unions decision to award Zambia an award for its role against corruption.

During the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Zambia was given an award by the African Union for its role against corruption.

The score card awards are given annually and this year’s ‘s award by the  African Union to Zambia was a recognition for progress made in mainstreaming gender in the fight against corruption.

But TIZ Executive Director Wesley Chibamba has described the criteria used to award Zambia for its role in the fight against corruption as a mockery.

Mr. Chibamba insists that his organization wants to know the criteria that was used to give Zambia an award by the African Union for its role against corruption.

And Mr. Chibamba has vowed to instigate President Edgar Lungu to suspend Infrastructure, Housing and Development Minister Ronald Chitotela after he was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission for alleged corrupt activities.

He has reminded President Lungu that he is disregarding the provision of the Anti-Corruption Act number 3 of 2012 particularly  section  47 sub section 1 which provides for the suspension of a public officer charged with corruption.

Mr. Chibamba further states that his organisation expects President Lungu to respect the provision of the law and do the right thing by suspending Mr. Chitotela so as to allow law enforcers do their job without intimidation.

Mr. Chibamba expects President Lungu to put a very strong stand and show his resolve not to tolerate corruption.

Recently the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested Infrastructure and Housing and development Minister Ronald Chitotela and charged with two counts of concealing property suspected of being proceeds of crime.

Meanwhile Patriots for Economic Progress [PEP] leader Sean Tembo has accused President Edgar Lungu of abrogating the law by letting Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Development Ronald Chitotela retain office while under investigation.

Mr. Tembo says the President`s action is against the Anti Corruption Commission Act  number 03 of 2012 which states that a public officer charged with corruption is to be immediately suspended  from office pending the outcome of the case investigation.
