Zambia drops 9 places in ranking on the 2018 TI index

Zambia has dropped 9 places in ranking on the 2018 Transparency International Corruption Perception Index (CPI).

From the 180 Countries gauged under the CPI, Zambia is now ranked number 105 after scoring 35 out of 100 points from the 37 out of 100 points it scored in 2017.

Announcing Zambia’s corruption status in Lusaka, Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) president Reuben Lifuka has disclosed that 17 countries ranked higher than Zambia in the Sub-Saharan Africa.

Mr. Lifuka however, notes that the country performed better than 31 other countries in the region.

He states that it is the first time in one year that Zambia has dropped by 2 points and 9 places on the CPI.

Mr. Lifuka states that given this performance, it is evident that corruption has become a major challenge for Zambia, adding that something needs to be done about it.

He says the TIZ is of the view that besides getting serious with investigations and prosecution of corruption cases, there is need for strong leadership in the fight against corruption.

Speaking at the same event, United Nations development programme (UNDP) country director Mandisa Mashologu affirmed the UN’s support to Zambia’s fight against corruption.

Ms. Mashologu says the UNDP considers Zambia’s ranking on the 2018 transparency international CPI as a call for the country to renew its commitment to the fight against the vice.
