Govt gives media 3 months in which to self regulate

Government has given the media in the Country a three months ultimatum to come up with a self regulatory framework or face statutory regulation.

Information and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo says government will step in with statutory regulation if the media fails to come up with a self regulatory framework after three months.

Mr. Kasolo states that government cannot leave a vacuum where the media is free to do whatever they like without any regulation and adherence to journalism ethics.

In an interview with QTV News, Mr. Kasolo has urged the media to consider resuscitating the Zambia Media Council (ZAMEC) if they do not want to be regulated by an Act of Parliament.

He states that he is ready to work with media bodies in ensuring that ZAMEC becomes the regulator for the Zambian media industry.

Mr Kasolo says this is especially that ZAMEC only failed to work because of lack of funding.
