Simukoko directs defiant shop owners to pay minimum wage in arrears

Minister of Labour and social security Joyce Simukoko has encouraged workers in the country to find time to read the labour laws so that they know their rights to avoid being exploited by their employers.

Speaking when she conducted inspections in shops around Kamwala trading area to check on the compliance levels to the increased minimum wage effected in September last year, Mrs Simukoko notes that some workers are ignorant about their rights, hence employers are taking advantage of them.

She says it is unfortunate that some workers do not even know that their working conditions where improved.

Mrs Simukoko expressed disappointment that some employers are not compliant to the revised minimum wage.

She has warned that employers who have not effected the minimum wage will have to pay arrears to the workers backdated to last year.

The Minister has since advised workers to report to her ministry if they will not receive their arrears.

She has further encouraged workers to feel free to visit the labour offices if their employers are not being complaint with the labour laws.
