President Lungu calls for vibrant economies in COMESA

President Edgar Lungu has noted the need for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) to enhance efforts aimed at creating vibrant economies.

President Lungu says COMESA has already taken the right decision to embrace the digital age as reflected in the theme of this year’s summit “COMESA : towards digital economic integration” .

He states that the challenge before COMESA member states now is to put in place necessary support structures and resources to ensure that their economies are not left behind.

President Lungu states that COMESA’s goal should not also be limited to assisting individuals to have food on the table, but to create a conducive environment for the private sector.

He notes that the private in COMESA member states should be able to generate the required resources for investment in value addition.

Speaking when he officiated at the 20th COMESA summit for Heads of States and government in Lusaka, President Lungu said COMESA member states cannot continue exporting raw materials among themselves as they are doing currently.

And outgoing COMESA Secretary General, Sindiso Ngwenya has thanked President Lungu for the hospitality accorded to the delegates attending the summit.

Mr. Sindiso Ngwenya says he has personally enjoyed his time as Secretary General of COMESA.

Former deputy minister of Finance Chileshe Kapwepwe will take over from Mr Ngwenya as COMESA Secretary General.

Among the Heads of State and government attending the summit include Malawi’s Peter Mutharika and Madagascar’s Hery Rajaonarimampianina who is the current chairperson of COMESA.
