Transport and Communications Minister, Brian Mushimba has disclosed that 613 vehicles were impounded in 2017 for having illegal number plates.

And Mr Mushimba has told Parliament in response to a question asked by Monze central Member of Parliament Jack Mwiimbu that number plates such as ECL 2021, Commando 1 and Number one bootlicker are illegal.

Mr Mushimba, however, states that the number plate ECL 2021 qualifies to be registered upon payment of about K8,000 to the Road Transport and Safety Agency by those interested in patenting the number plate.

He says the practice of illegal number plates compromises security.

He says the Road Transport and Safety Agency is conducting random checks to curb the practice of illegal number plates.

Mr Mushimba adds that as way of curbing the practice, RTSA will also introduce electronic number plates.

The Minister states that RATSA has the full mandate to address the practice of using illegal number plates of vehicles.
