President Lungu directs treasury, spending agencies
President Edgar Lungu has directed the treasury and all spending agencies to urgently constitute a task force to expedite the completion of infrastructure projects which have stalled across the country.
President Lungu is particularly disappointed that many projects in Muchinga province which he recently toured have stalled for a long time.
To this effect, the President this morning summoned a special meeting of selected Ministers and technocrats from ministries and departments concerned to agree on a new strategy to rationalize and on both new and ongoing projects.
He made it clear that he wants to see all stalled projects completed before new ones are contracted.
President Lungu directed that focus should be on the projects whose completion level had reached about 85%,before moving to those at 60% and eventually starting new ones.
And President Lungu has noted the need to streamline the Private Public Partnership unit under the ministry of finance to improve on the pace at which it implements projects.
He has observed that the PPP Unit is currently not operating to the desired expectations,hence the need to reexamine it.
The minister have since resolved to reconvene at State house on Tuesday,6th February 2018 to map out a new strategy to respond to the President’s concerns.
The Ministers present in the meeting included Finance minister Felix Mutati,Housing and Infrastructure minister Ronald Chitotela,Local government minister Vincent Mwale,Higher Education minister Nkandu Luo,General education minister Dennis Wanchinga and Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo.
Others are national development planning minister Alexander Chiteme,Halth Minister Chitalu Chilufya,Presidential Affairs Minister Freedom Sikazwe and Muchinga province minister Malozo Sichone.
