The University of Zambia Lecturers’ and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) and Mulungushi University Union have demanded that Government should issue a public apology to all Unions in the Universities for trying to suppress Unionism in the Universities.

Briefing journalists in Kabwe, the unions have stated that having shown the worst form of disregard for staff in the three public universities, Government should know that disregard for Unions is not in the best interest of the nation and that if Government is really interested in a better Zambia, such an action should be avoided completely.

UNZALARU President Dr. Evans Lampi says the strategy of intimidation and scare tactics are not in the best interest of not only Unionism but national dialogue as well.

Dr. Lampi says government, through the Labour Commissioner should immediately withdraw the letter written to Unions at Copperbelt University unreservedly.

He says government should be the first to show leadership and stop politicking on such important matters.

Dr. Lampi states that unions in these universities will not take kindly to intimidation and threats.

He hopes that Government will take this communication seriously and will respond accordingly. We are very sad and we pray that we will see a better end to this.
