ZRCS expects number of DRC refugees to reach 10,000 by year end

The Zambia Red Cross Society expects the number of Congolese refugees at Kenani refugee transit camp in Nchelenge to reach 10,000 by the end of December 2017.

Communications Manager Bruce Mulenga says the number of asylum seekers at Kenani camp has continued to increase with the number currently standing at 8,863.

Mr. Mulenga says on average 100 to 90 persons are crossing into Zambia from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Speaking when receiving a donation of 138 bales of clothing meant for the refugees from Radio Phoenix helpline, Mr Mulenga disclosed that of the over 8,000 refugees currently at the camp, 81 percent are woman and children, while 59 are children below the age of 18 year.

He adds that 865 are unaccompanied and separated children who lack parental support.

Mr Mulenga has since applauded the gesture by Radio Phoenix helpline and called for more humanitarian support in helping attend to the needs of the refugees especially the children who have lost everything.
