The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has disclosed that it will Commission the Kankolonkolo Grid Extension Project in Kasempa district by 30th October 2016.

REA Board Chairperson Professor Jorry Mwenechanya says Professor Mwenechanya says the Authority is committed to provide electricity infrastructure to rural areas using appropriate technologies in order to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life in the rural areas.

He says the projects are expected to positively contribute to social economic development for the people in Kankolonkolo.

Professor Mwenechanya says the Grid Extension would benefit a catchment population of 6, 750.

Professor Mwenechanya notes that considering that the main income generating activity for the people in the area is farming, it is expected that farmers will include perishable products to their farming portfolio as they will have electricity to refrigerate their products.

Speaking after touring the project, Professor Mwenechanya has noted that the availability of Electricity will also make it possible for local people to set up new businesses such as electric hammer mills, barbershops, wielding among other things.

He says the Kankolonkolo gird extension project will provide electricity to Kankolonkolo Primary School, Kankolonkolo Rural Health Centre, the local market, Chief Ingwe’s Palace, a Local Court and a number of households in the area.
