Acting President Inonge Wina has disclosed that government spent over K4 billion on road accident related expenditure last year alone.

Ms Wina says this has been a very costly undertaking and a drain on the limited national resources.

Speaking in Lusaka today during the 2nd National Road Safety Indaba under the theme “Getting involved in promoting road safety, a shared responsibility”, Ms Wina says government is deeply concerned by the high and rising frequency of road fatalities.

She says the nation cannot continue to lose many lives of people on the roads.

She says it is disheartening that 87 percent of the road accidents in Zambia are as a result of human error.

The Vice president has since assured the nation that government will not sit back and watch this trend go unabated.

Speaking at the same Indaba, RTSA Board Chairperson Webster Nonde says the current indicators on road crashes and fatalities show that Zambia still has a long way from the desired position which will give a higher assurance of safety to all road users.

Engineer Nonde says the January to June 2016 road fatality levels stand at 1, 113 people with 58 percent of the fatalities occurring in the rural areas.
