Zanaco opened a ten point lead at the top of the MTN FAZ Super League after they defeated Kabwe Warriors 1-0 in a Week 18 match played at Sunset Stadium on Saturday.

The lone goal was scored by Ziyo Tembo, who, with three league goals, is the highest scoring defender in the league.

The victory moved the bankers to 43 points from 18 matches, eight points better than they were at the same stage last season when they trailed eventual champions Zesco United by five points.

After 18 matches last season, Mumamba Numba’s men were in third position with 35 points, having scored 30 goals and a goal difference of +13, but this time around they lead with 36 goals, having conceded only six goals in the process.

This season though they look like genuine title contenders, although Zesco United, with two games in hand, do not look like a side that will give away the title easily. Nkana, Power Dynamos and Green Buffaloes will also fight to the end.

Meanwhile, Power Dynamos moved to fourth position, level on 31 points with third-placed Nkana, following a 2-1 win at Napsa Stars thanks to Fwayo Tembo’s first-half brace.

Yourembember Banda scored the consolation goal for the hosts. Nkana host eight place Nkwazi on Sunday.

And Green Buffaloes came from a goal down to draw 1-1 at home to Green Eagles and dropped to fifth position with 30 points.

Red Arrows supplanted Mufulira Wanderers to move into 10th position with a 1-0 victory over Nakambala Leopards thanks to a penalty scored by Stanley Nshimbi.

There was also a victory for Lusaka Dynamos who moved out of the relegation zone following a 2-1 victory Mufulira Blackpool thanks to goals from Conlyde Luchanga and Kennedy Musonda.

Alison Mulelembe registered his name on the score sheet for Mathews Njovu’s men who remain winless since returning to the top flight.

On Sunday, Nchanga Rangers play Lusaka Tigers in the early kick-off of a double header set for Nkana Stadium while Nkana will match up with Nkwazi thereafter.
