Destiny now lies with you, Grand Coalition puts it to Zambians

The Grand Coalition on the Campaign for the People Driven Constitution says destiny is now in the hands of the Zambian people themselves with regards the enactment of the new constitution.

Grand Coalition Chairperson Fr Leonard Chiti says if the people of Zambia agree with the path government has taken to make piecemeal amendments to the current constitution as opposed to enacting a whole new document that will be the people’s belief.

Fr Chiti however states that what saddens him and the civil society fraternity is how government is able to take advantage of the ignorance and weakness of its own citizens.

Father Chiti has told Qfm News by telephone that it is distressing to see the Patriotic Front government ride roughshod over people’s concerns and proceed with its own selfish interests and motivations.

He says the PF government has thus demonstrated that what matters to it is to remain in power by going to the 2016 general elections under the same constitution with the view of being re-elected.

Father Chiti states that the Grand Coalition can therefore only tell the Zambian people that their own leaders are in the habit of cheating, but that what is unfortunate is that the people themselves have fallen for lies and have accepted to be lied to.

Asked whether this entails that the Grand Coalition will now consider disbanding owing to the fact that it has failed to achieve its goal of having a people driven constitution enacted, Fr Chiti has ruled out disbanding the coalition.

He was however quick to state that as long as Zambia does not have a new constitution in place, the crusade of campaigning for the enactment of such a document either as Grand Coalition or as individual civil society organizations will continue.
