ECZ reminded of its mandate to censure erring political parties

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has been reminded of its mandate to censure political parties that use development to disadvantage opponents during elections.

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has cautioned the ECZ that the country’s Electoral system risks being a laughing stock if the commission continues to allow the abrogation of the Electoral Law.

FODEP Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi says the Electoral Act is very clear in its provision that corrupting people’s minds with development during an election amounts to electoral malpractice.

Mr. Chipenzi states that the ECZ as the enforcer of the Electoral law should therefore work in collaboration with the Zambia Police and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in identifying such crimes during elections.

He has particularly urged the ECZ, the ACC and the Police to take keen interest in the ongoing campaigns for Bangweulu Parliamentary by-election.
