Govt will not ignore the construction sector – Mukanga

Government says it will not ignore or take for granted the contribution the construction industry is currently making to Zambia’s economic growth.

Transport, Works, Supply and Communication Minister Yamfwa Mukanga says government is however mindful that while the construction industry continues to grow; challenges in the industry are also on the rise.

Mr. Mukanga says government has taken note that the industry is currently faced with challenges such the rising project costs attributed to the rise in prices of raw materials and the depreciation of the Kwacha in relation to other currencies.

He says government has further observed the need to address the gaps in the legal framework to effectively regulate the industry.

Mr. Mukanga however states that he is aware that the National Council for Construction Act No. 13 of 2003 is undergoing review in order to make it responsive to the needs of the modern global society.

He says this is in addition to the Project Registration Statutory Instrument (SI) he recently signed which will read with the NCC Act No. 13 of 2003 with the hope that the SI enables the collection of the much needed statistics to develop the construction sector.

Mr. Mukanga was speaking this morning at the official opening of a two days NCC stakeholders’ workshop in Lusaka.

Earlier, NCC Executive Director Charles Mushota said the stakeholders’ workshop is meant to provide inputs for the construction industry legal framework review.

Mr. Mushota says the workshop is also intended to enable both the NCC and the construction sector improve service delivery.
