Govt hopeful CBU impasse will be resolved

Government has called on the Copperbelt University (CBU) Academic Union to resolve their outstanding matters with the university council amicably.

Education Deputy Minister Sydney Mushanga has told QFM News that the academic union must come to terms and understand that they can resolve their differences amicably without calling for the expulsion of the CBU Vice Chancellor Professor Naison Ngoma.

Mr. Mushanga says the ministry has no doubt that the issues at CBU can be resolved for as long as the parties involved come together and iron out their differences.

He says the solution in resolving the impasse at CBU does not lie in Professor Ngoma leaving his position but in dialogue.

Mr Mushanga has disclosed that last week a meeting was called by Education Minister Michael Kaingu with officials from the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and CBU to strategize how the impasse can be resolved.

Mr. Mushanga states that it is important for parties involved to understand that the longer it takes to resolve the impasse the more it affects the students.

The Education Deputy Minister has since appealed the parties involved to spare the students the agony by resolving their wrangles quickly.
