The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has submitted its proposed budget for the 2016 tripartite elections to the Treasury.

ECZ Spokesperson Cris Akufuna has confirmed the development to QFM News in an interview while withholding details on how much the commission intends to spend to conduct the 2016 elections.

Mr. Akufuna says the budget for the 2016 general election will only be made public once the Treasury approved has approved the proposals the commission has submitted.

He explains that the process of liaising with the Treasury on the proposed elections budget involves a lot.

Mr. Akufuna says once the Commission submits its proposed budget, the Treasury may have to do a back and forth liaising with the commission in terms of possibilities and availability of resources before approving the budget.

He says not until this process is complete can information on how much the commission intends to spend on the elections be made public.

Mr. Akufuna however states that preparations for next year’s general election which begun by the submission of the budget proposals are ongoing.

He states that this is line with the commission’s established practice of starting preparations of any general election not less than 2 years before the actual poll.
