Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda has reaffirmed President Lungu’s commitment to address the challenges prisoners are facing in the country.

And Mr. Chanda says President Edgar Lungu is trying his level best in decongesting the prisons.

Mr. Chanda says the report that the prisons are overcrowded by 200 percent has worried the Head of State and that he is tying his level best to address the inhuman conditions of inmates.

Mr. Chanda says the move by President Lungu to commute the death sentences of all 332 condemned prisoners at Kabwe’s Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison to life imprisonment is one way of addressing the inhuman conditions of prisoners.

He has disclosed that President Lungu has also sent seven prisoners from Angola to go and finish their sentences in their own country as one way of decongesting the prisons.

He says the Head of State finds it difficult to sign the death role saying since he came into office he has not signed any.

Mr. Chanda says President Lungu remains committed in ensuring that he improves the living conditions of prisoners throughout the country.
