Over 96 people arrested for drug offences

Over 96 people were arrested countywide during the Heroes and Unity holidays for various drug offences.

Drug Enforcement Commission public relations officer Theresa Katongo says the Commission in Muchinga seized 3.780 tonnes of fresh cannabis plants from Mpika and Chama Districts.

Ms Katongo says in Mpika District, the Commission arrested Maureen Nkandu, 51, a peasant farmer of Thomas Village for unlawful cultivation of 1.1 tonnes of fresh cannabis plants.

She says Ms Nkandu is jointly charged with her two sons aged 13 and 15-years-old respectively.

In Chama District, the Commission arrested and jointly charged Fred Bowa, 59, a peasant farmer of Maimebe Village and Frank Mutambo, 35, a peasant farmer of the same village for unlawful cultivation of 2.680 tonnes of fresh cannabis plants.

On the Copperbelt, the Commission arrested a 35-year-old man at the Zambia International Trade Fair in Ndola for trafficking in cannabis.

Emmanuel Kanyakula, 35, a street vendor of 1453 Kaloko compound in Ndola was arrested for trafficking in 5.5kg of loose cannabis. Also arrested on the Copperbelt is Jairos Kapepala, 46, a street vendor of Kalumekansha Village along Solwezi Road for trafficking in 28kg of cannabis.

In Lusaka, Reuben Soko, 40, a businessman of Mtendere East was been arrested for trafficking in 10 rocks of cocaine.

Meanwhile in Northern Province, the Commission arrested some Congolese nationals for trafficking in cannabis.

Gerom Mwaba, 43, a peasant farmer of Mbweto area in Congo together with Benoit Mutete, 31, a peasant farmer of Kabembe Village in Congo and Delphine Kapoma, 33, a peasant farmer of Mbabula Village in Congo were arrested and jointly charged for trafficking in 78kg of cannabis contrary to the Laws of Zambia, in Luapula Province, the Commission arrested a 16-year-old boy of Chandwe Village in Nchelenge District for trafficking in 28 balls of cannabis weighing 5.6g.

In Samfya District, the Commission arrested Wilbroad Katilimba, 25, a businessman of Mumba Village for trafficking in 4.8kg of cannabis and Given Mwape, 46, a business woman of the same village for trafficking in 5.72kg of cannabis.

And in Eastern Province, the Commission arrested Peter Phiri, 27, a peasant farmer of Mateyo Village in Mambwe District for trafficking in 12.6kg of loose cannabis. All the suspects will appear in court soon.
