United Party for National Development (UPND) Kalomo Member of Parliament Request Muntanga has appealed to government to assess the impact of the social cash transfer scheme in his constituency.

Mr. Muntanga notes that from the time the scheme was introduced, it appears the programme has had very little impact in terms of uplifting the lives of the venerable people in their respective communities.

Mr. Muntanga explains that it is important for government not to rush to increase the number of beneficiaries, but make an assessment of whether people’s lives have really been transformed.

He says in as much as the move by government to increase the number of social cash transfer beneficiary districts is welcome, there is need to understand that there is still poverty in many homes hence the need to find strategies which will ensure the programme transforms the lives of beneficiaries.

Mr. Muntanga says the ministry of community development, mother and child health should in this regard ensure that officers responsible for the social cash transfer scheme conduct a thorough research and establish how best the beneficiaries can be helped in identifying ways of spending the little monies get.
