Students union ask Lungu to intervene in CBU closure

The Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) has called on Republican President Edgar Lungu to intervene in the indefinite closure of the institution.

The Students Union says the decision by the minister of Education to close the institution is an indication of failure, lack of commitment towards resolving serious matters of education.

COBUSU President Humphrey Mwenya says the decision by the government to close the University over the standoff between management and the lecturers lacks merit.

Mr. Mwenya says it is both saddening and disappointing that the government which has been entrusted with the welfare of the Zambian people could make such a decision after adequate amount of time was given to come up with an amicable solution to the impasse.

Mr. Mwenya says students should not be the ones to suffer in this matter, saying the lack of priorities by the government has cost the students.

He says students have been left to wonder if government has the heart for the poor Zambian families striving very hard to access education.

Mr Mwenya adds that this is the worst that could have been done by the government.

Mr. Myenya says the decision to close the institution should be reversed with immediate effect and a solution found, adding that this is not the first time such a standoff has occurred between lecturers and Professor Ngoma.
