ZESCO tariffs will not change- Wina assures the nation

Government has ruled out hiking of electricity tariffs on account of loses that ZESCO is incurring as a result of the power deficits in the country.

Vice president Inonge Wina has assured the nation that electricity tariffs will not change for the time being because government has to maintain the services and ensure that electricity is generated.

Ms. Wina has explained this means that reducing tariffs suddenly at the time that the country is experiencing a power deficit will only introduce new problems in the systems.

She however states that the Zambian consumers will be protected through measures that ZESCO and the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water Development are currently working on.

Ms. Wina said this in Parliament this morning in response to a question by PF Mpongwe Member of Parliament Gabriel Namulambe during her question time.

Mr. Namulambe wanted to know what measures government has put in place to avoid people in the country to suffer further from possible increase of tariffs by ZESCO given the loses it is incurring from the current power deficit.

And Ms. Wina has challenged people with information about the alleged corruption taking place at ZESCO to report its management to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Ms. Wina notes that this is because as far as she knows corruption that is said to be prevalent at ZESCO is only a perception

She says if there is corruption taking place at the power utility company there would have been some cases that could have been brought before the ACC to investigate.

The republican vice president was responding to a question by Independent Lubansenshi Member of Parliament Patrick Mucheleka who wanted to know what steps government will take to restore public confidence in ZESCO.
